A long-distance move shares many of the same challenges of any move to a new location, except everything takes longer and is more stressful and expensive. So it’s all the more important to pick a good long-distance moving company.

Our experts advise that consumers be realistic about the time it takes for a long-distance move. “Many people don’t realize how exhausting moving really is, even beyond the physical labor,” says Dawn M. Smith, a Forbes Home Advisory Board member and moving expert with 10 long-distance moves of her own under her belt. “Allow more days than you think necessary before returning to work and school after the move.”

Forbes Home ran a Consumer Sentiment Index analysis of more than 40,000 customer reviews and comments found that consumers are generally satisfied with the level of service they received from the larger national companies and are happy with the professionalism and level of service they received. There were more general complaints, however, about unreliable price quotes or unexpected fees, with more than 50% of comments expressing negative sentiment for pricing and transparency. Since long-distance trips tend to be the most expensive moves, that means it’s a good idea to make sure you pay close attention to your quoted price and ask questions about any additional fees or potential overages.
